Turkey vs USA - Match Preview

This is effectively the Group D final: Turkey and the USA, the two highest-ranked nations in the bracket, collide on matchday 3 with top spot almost certainly up for grabs at a packed SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Turkey qualified for the World Cup through the UEFA play-offs, beating Romania 1-0 and then Kosovo 1-0 in back-to-back decisive fixtures in March 2026. Coach Vincenzo Montella has moulded a side rich in attacking quality - Arda Güler of Real Madrid is the creative centrepiece, flanked by Kenan Yildiz and Baris Alper Yilmaz, while Hakan Çalhanoğlu anchors midfield. Turkey are ranked 22nd in the world and, on paper, represent the strongest outfit in this group.

The USA enter as co-hosts, backed by a passionate home crowd at SoFi Stadium. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been experimenting with a back three to address defensive vulnerabilities exposed in heavy defeats against Belgium (2-5) and Portugal (0-2) in March 2026. A 3-2 pre-tournament win over Senegal provided a timely confidence boost, with Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun showing signs of form. With 32 international goals to his name, Pulisic remains the biggest threat in the American attack - and this occasion, on home soil at a World Cup, is precisely where he tends to deliver.

Head-to-Head: Turkey vs USA

These two nations share a remarkably balanced history: across 5 meetings, each side has won twice and drawn once - making this World Cup showdown feel like a genuinely open contest with no psychological edge for either team. Turkey did, however, win the most recent encounter in June 2025.

A look back at every previous encounter between Turkey and the USA:

• 04 Sep 1991 - International Friendly - Turkey 1-1 USA
• 19 Jun 2003 - FIFA Confederations Cup - USA 1-2 Turkey
• 29 May 2010 - International Friendly - USA 2-1 Turkey
• 01 Jun 2014 - International Friendly - USA 2-1 Turkey
• 07 Jun 2025 - International Friendly - USA 1-2 Turkey

Turkey - Recent Form

Turkey head into the World Cup on the back of 4 wins and 1 draw in their last 5 matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding just 2 - a formidable record heading into any tournament.

Their most emphatic display came in a pre-tournament friendly on 1 June 2026, when Turkey dismantled FYR Macedonia 4-0. Before that, Montella's side navigated the high-stakes UEFA play-offs with clinical efficiency: a 1-0 home win over Romania on 26 March, followed by a gritty 1-0 away victory in Kosovo on 31 March to seal their World Cup berth. In the Nations League the previous autumn, Turkey held the reigning European champions Spain to a 2-2 draw - a result that underlined just how dangerous this side can be against top opposition. A 2-0 home victory over Bulgaria rounded out an impressive autumn campaign.

USA - Recent Form

The USA arrive at their home World Cup with 3 wins and 2 losses in their last 5 matches - a mixed return, but one that ended on an upward curve just before the tournament began.

Two friendlies in March 2026 raised alarm bells: a 2-5 defeat to Belgium was followed by a 0-2 loss to Portugal, exposing the depth issues Pochettino has been working to address. However, the team rebounded with a 3-2 win over Senegal on 31 May 2026, and their autumn 2025 results painted a more encouraging picture - a stunning 5-1 thrashing of Uruguay and a 2-1 win over Paraguay demonstrated genuine firepower. With 12 goals scored and 11 conceded in 5 games, the USA are a team capable of both exciting football and defensive fragility in equal measure.
