Football – the most popular sport in the world
Football is loved all over the world. In the vast majority of countries, football is number one in terms of viewership - according to statistics, the number of football fans globally exceeds 4 billion! There are around 300 million people playing this sport. Games similar to today's football existed in many ancient countries, such as Greece, Rome, China, and Japan. The rules similar to those in force today were written down in Great Britain, mainly based on the rules of so-called folk football, which is why England is called the "home of football". Interestingly, etymologists have never explained the origin of the word "football", most likely it was used to refer to several popular games played on foot, as opposed to games played on horseback, which were popular among the aristocracy.
The rules, of course, constantly change in certain details, technology is increasingly involved in matches (VAR, balls with chips indicating whether they crossed the goal line), but the most important elements remain unchanged - two teams of 11 players play, and the winner is the one who scores more goals. The referee can caution players with a yellow or red card (the latter means the player must leave the field and weaken their team), the game consists of 2 halves of 45 minutes each (time is not stopped). In matches that must be decided in case of a draw, extra time is played, and if that doesn't change the result, penalty shootouts are taken.
Football – the biggest leagues (Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, La Liga)
The top 5 leagues in Europe are considered to be the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1, and Spanish La Liga. Teams from these leagues have the right to field the highest number of representatives in European cup competitions, such as the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. These leagues have the highest viewership and offer the highest earnings. Each of the major football leagues has its own title sponsor and domestic broadcaster (or broadcasters) that broadcast the matches live. The most lucrative rights are considered to be those of the Premier League - held by Sky and TNT, who will pay clubs nearly 7 billion pounds for them!
Live football – emotions, big tournaments, big stars
Football is full of emotions. In many countries, life comes to a standstill during important matches or tournaments, and successes turn into national holidays. The biggest football event in the world is considered to be the World Cup, held once every 4 years. Although football is part of the Olympic program since 1900, unlike most sports, an Olympic medal is not considered particularly prestigious - triumphs in continental championships such as the European Championship (EURO), Copa América, Africa Cup of Nations, or Asian Cup are more highly valued. Victories in the mentioned European club competitions, Club World Cup, or the recently introduced Nations League are also highly regarded. All the most popular football competitions are fully broadcasted on various television channels.
Big tournaments also mean big stars. Discussions are still ongoing about who was the greatest footballer of all time, Pele, Maradona, or maybe Messi? Since 1991, FIFA has been awarding the Player of the Year, chosen by international coaches (sometimes also by national team captains). Lionel Messi has won this title 8 times. The Argentinean competes in this regard with Cristiano Ronaldo - the Portuguese has won the award 5 times. So far, Kylian Mbappe has not won, the Frenchman dazzles in national team matches, but lacks club success.
